Science & History behind Voter's Ink

Science & History behind Voter's Ink

For the upcoming election, an order of 26.5 lakh phials, each with a capacity of 10 ml, has been placed.

The ink to be used contains 20 percent silver nitrate, a colorless compound that becomes visible under ultraviolet light, including sunlight, remaining detectable for up to 72 hours post-application.

This ink is remarkably resistant to various substances such as soap, liquids, home-cleansing agents, and detergents.

Initially developed by CSIR, India, it was later patented by the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) in New Delhi.

Mysore Paints & Varnish Ltd., a Karnataka Government Undertaking licensed to manufacture the ink since 1962, continues its role in providing this specialized electoral ink.
